Porphyria Cutanea Tarda

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is a disorder within a spectrum of porphyrias, a group of enzymatic diseases that cause abnormal heme biosynthesis. It is caused by the deficiency of the uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD) enzyme and should be differentiated from other porphyrias. The concurrent presence of iron dysmetabolism with overload and the sequelae that follow makes it essential to search for other concomitant illnesses that may exhibit the same abnormality. The predisposing factors are many and can overlap. PCT is a nonfatal condition that typically presents with skin manifestations, provided it is appropriately diagnosed and managed in a timely and consistent manner. This activity outlines the evaluation and management of porphyria cutanea tarda, emphasizing its relationship to other predisposing illnesses; it also highlights the role of the interprofessional team in improving care for patients with this condition.
