Primary Central Nervous System Vasculitis

Primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS), also known as central nervous system (CNS) vasculitis, is a rare inflammatory disorder that affects the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord, without systemic involvement or an underlying connective tissue disease. This course reviews the clinical manifestations of PACNS, including nonspecific symptoms, most commonly focal neurologic deficits, severe persistent headaches, and cognitive impairment, as well as additional manifestations, such as ataxia, seizures, psychiatric or amnestic disorders, visual changes, and, rarely, spinal cord involvement. Participants will gain an understanding of the differentiation of PACNS from secondary CNS vasculitis and other mimicking conditions, the interpretation of cerebrospinal fluid and advanced imaging findings, and the development of individualized treatment plans using induction and maintenance immunosuppressive therapies. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying PACNS, understanding common underlying etiologies, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this rare and complex neurologic disorder to optimize patient outcomes.
