Renal Biopsy

Renal biopsy is a critical diagnostic tool for evaluating kidney diseases, providing essential information for both focal renal lesions and diffuse systemic conditions. There are 2 primary types targeted biopsies, which assess mass lesions for malignancy, and non-targeted biopsies, which sample the renal cortex to diagnose systemic diseases affecting kidney function, such as transplant rejection, medication-related complications, diabetes mellitus, or other chronic diseases. Renal biopsies can be performed through various techniques, including percutaneous, transvenous, laparoscopic, and open surgical approaches. This activity primarily focuses on percutaneous, image-guided biopsies both targeted and non-targeted covering the indications, procedural techniques, and key considerations for obtaining high-quality diagnostic samples while minimizing risks. This activity reviews the process of obtaining kidney tissue samples for diagnosing both focal renal lesions and diffuse renal diseases, distinguishing between targeted and non-targeted biopsies. This activity also reviews renal anatomy and the indications for renal biopsy, with a particular focus on evaluating malignancy. Techniques vary based on the patient’s overall and renal anatomy, and various approaches are available. Imaging plays a crucial role in guiding the procedure, with each modality presenting unique risks and benefits. Complications, although rare, can be minimized by taking certain precautions and monitoring specific parameters. This activity also highlights the essential roles of the interprofessional team including clinicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, and radiologic technologists in optimizing patient evaluation, procedural success, and post-biopsy care.
