Sarcocystis

Sarcocystosis is an infection caused by the intracellular protozoan parasites of the Sarcocystis species, with a global distribution but sporadic occurrence in humans. Most human infections are asymptomatic and typically discovered incidentally, making it a relatively rare condition. The parasite can be contracted by consuming undercooked meat or contaminated food and water. When symptomatic, sarcocystosis may present with gastrointestinal or muscular symptoms. Due to the challenges in diagnosing and the limited number of reported cases, awareness and research on sarcocystosis remain underdeveloped, highlighting the need for greater attention to its pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment. In this course, participants learn about the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of sarcocystosis. The course emphasizes the importance of understanding the clinical presentation and challenges in diagnosing the condition. By collaborating with an interprofessional team, including infectious disease specialists, microbiologists, and public health professionals, healthcare professionals can improve detection and management strategies. This collaboration ensures comprehensive care, promotes timely interventions, and enhances patient outcomes, particularly in areas where Sarcocystis infections may be more common or underreported.
