Sepsis in Hospital Medicine Myocardial Infarction in Hospital Medicine Part 1

Sepsis remains one of the most frequently misdiagnosed and high-liability conditions in both emergency and inpatient settings. The margin for error is dangerously narrow: missed early signs such as subtle vital sign abnormalities or pulse temperature disparity can lead to rapid clinical deterioration, septic shock, or death. Malpractice claims frequently arise from delays in diagnosis, failure to recognize early or atypical presentations, and delays in initiating timely antibiotics and source control. This course examines real-world cases to identify common diagnostic pitfalls and cognitive errors, particularly in time-pressured clinical environments. Clinicians will learn to recognize early red flags, apply current guidelines for empiric treatment, and coordinate care more effectively across interdisciplinary teams. The goal is to promote faster intervention, reduce medicolegal risk, and improve outcomes for high-acuity patients. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: recognize pulse temperature disparity in febrile patients with tachycardia to support timely diagnosis of sepsis; apply current recommendations for early antibiotic administration in patients with suspected sepsis to reduce morbidity and mortality; implement appropriate elements of early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) in patients with sepsis and septic shock to improve outcomes; and identify sepsis resulting from meningococcal meningitis, intra-abdominal sources, and necrotizing fasciitis.
