Shared Decision-Making and Motivational Interviewing in the Care of Patients with HBV, HCV, and/or HDV

This program highlights the essential role of shared decision-making (SDM) and motivational interviewing in caring for individuals with or at risk for HBV, HCV, and HDV. Moving beyond traditional paternalistic models of care, SDM positions the patient as the central member of the care team encouraging open dialogue around goals, concerns, life circumstances, and structural barriers that may influence treatment choices and adherence. Expert clinicians and researchers will outline practical frameworks for implementing SDM, demonstrate the use of motivational interviewing to support patient activation, and provide examples of tailoring discussions for diverse cultural and social contexts. The session emphasizes how patient-centered communication can build trust, strengthen therapeutic relationships, and enable sustained engagement in care across the viral hepatitis spectrum. This CME Outfitters Snack activity is the third in the four-part series Linking Knowledge to Action: Empowering HCPs in Screening and Treatment of Patients Across the Viral Hepatitis Spectrum. The series is led by moderators Su Wang, MD (USA) and Heiner Wedemeyer, MD (Germany), with expert discussants Jean-Michel Pawlotsky, MD, PhD (France), Maria Buti, MD, PhD (Spain), George Lau, MD (Hong Kong) and Debika Bhattacharya, MD (USA).
