Splenic Trauma

Splenic trauma is a significant concern in abdominal injury, most commonly resulting from blunt force mechanisms such as motor vehicle collisions, falls, or sports injuries. Penetrating trauma, though less frequent, also contributes to splenic injury. Due to the spleen s rich vascular supply, damage can lead to life-threatening hemorrhage and rapid hemodynamic instability. Historically managed with surgery, the current standard of care favors nonoperative management in those who are hemodynamically stable, prioritizing organ preservation to maintain the spleen s immunologic and hematopoietic functions. Diagnostic imaging including Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) and contrast-enhanced computed tomography is essential for early detection, grading of injury, and monitoring for delayed complications. This continuing education activity enhances clinician competence in the evaluation and multidisciplinary management of splenic trauma. Participants learn to identify when nonoperative management is appropriate, implement embolization techniques, and recognize signs requiring surgical intervention. The course also addresses complication management, including overwhelming post-splenectomy infection. Collaboration with interventional radiologists, trauma surgeons, critical care providers, pediatric specialists, and nurses fosters a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that improves outcomes, reduces morbidity, and supports optimal recovery.
