Substance Use in Pregnancy

Perinatal substance use remains a major public health concern with significant implications for maternal, fetal, and neonatal health, requiring clinicians to deliver evidence-based, compassionate, and multidisciplinary care. This activity reviews substance use and substance use disorder during pregnancy, emphasizing current recommendations for universal screening, diagnosis, counseling, and treatment. Participants examine the neurobiology of addiction in pregnancy, contemporary management of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, stimulant, and opioid use disorders, evolving fentanyl-era clinical considerations, medication-assisted treatment, neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, breastfeeding guidance, and relevant legal and psychosocial issues. Evidence from recent guidelines and emerging studies will be integrated to support clinical decision-making across prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying substance use disorders, implementing patient-centered interventions, applying current guideline-based management strategies, collaborating effectively within interprofessional teams, and optimizing outcomes for pregnant individuals and their infants.
