Sweet Syndrome

Sweet syndrome, also known as acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, is a rare condition characterized by the sudden onset of tender erythematous plaques or nodules, often accompanied by fever, arthralgia, and systemic symptoms such as headaches. Although the diagnosis is primarily based on clinical presentation, histological examination of the lesions reveals a neutrophilic infiltrate, which is crucial for confirming the diagnosis. Clinicians must be vigilant for atypical presentations, especially in patients with underlying conditions like myelodysplastic syndrome, where the infiltrate may present with atypical mononuclear cells instead of neutrophils. Effective management primarily involves systemic corticosteroids to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications. Participants in this course develop a deeper understanding of the clinical features, evaluation, and management strategies for Sweet syndrome. The course highlights the importance of recognizing atypical presentations and associations with hematologic malignancies. By fostering collaboration among dermatologists, hematologists, and primary care clinicians, the course emphasizes an interprofessional team approach to enhance patient care. This collaboration is essential for accurate diagnosis, timely management, and improved patient outcomes, ensuring that all aspects of a patient’s health are considered in the treatment plan.
