Targeting EGFR Alterations: Precision Approaches to Frontline Treatment of Late-Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

To provide optimal patient care, community and VHA oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, other health care professionals who treat patients with lung cancer must be prepared with a comprehensive understanding of the appropriate diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with late-stage NSCLC with EGFRm and the clinical utility of agents that could significantly impact patient outcomes. In the past, individuals with late-stage EGFRm NSCLC had a large and unmet need for safe and effective therapies. However, evolving precision medical approaches, which use genetic testing to detect specific EGFRm and to identify patients who are eligible for the corresponding targeted therapies, have significantly improved outcomes for these patients. Now that a variety of therapy choices are available, clinicians in the VA and community oncology settings must stay informed of new guidelines, understand the relevant trial data, and properly coordinate within MDC teams to identify and manage AEs and to allow for optimal patient experiences and outcomes.
