Temper Tantrums

Temper tantrums are common behavioral episodes in early childhood that may involve crying, screaming, aggression, breath-holding, or oppositional behavior. They are usually a normal developmental response to frustration, fatigue, hunger, or illness in young children with limited emotional regulation and coping skills. Clinicians must distinguish typical tantrums from behaviors suggesting developmental, neurologic, psychiatric, psychosocial, or medical concerns. Evaluation requires understanding age-appropriate emotional regulation, common triggers, family dynamics, and environmental influences. Management focuses on caregiver education, prevention strategies, behavioral interventions, and reinforcement of healthy parent-child interactions. Red flag features include extreme aggression, self-injury, prolonged episodes, developmental regression, or tantrums outside the expected developmental period. An interprofessional approach involving pediatricians, mental health professionals, nurses, social workers, and educators improves assessment, family support, and outcomes. Participation in this activity enhances team competence in recognizing concerning behaviors, applying evidence-based management, and coordinating care for affected children and families.
