Typical Bacterial Pneumonia

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common lower respiratory tract infection associated with substantial morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality worldwide. The condition develops outside healthcare settings and may result from typical or atypical bacterial pathogens, with Streptococcus pneumoniae remaining a prominent typical bacterial cause. CAP represents a leading cause of death among children younger than 5 years worldwide and a major cause of hospitalization among children and adults in the United States. This course reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, risk factors, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based management of CAP caused by typical bacteria. Participants learn to recognize key clinical features, identify likely pathogens, interpret diagnostic findings, and select appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Collaboration among clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, microbiologists, and other interprofessional team members promotes timely diagnosis, antimicrobial stewardship, coordinated care, and improved patient outcomes.
