Ultrasound-Guided Intravenous Access

Approximately 300 million peripheral intravenous catheters are placed annually in the U.S., with up to 80% of hospitalized patients receiving one. Several factors can complicate placement using the standard blind approach. Patients with comorbidities, including intravenous drug use, obesity, hypovolemia, end-stage renal disease, and extremity amputations, often present with vasculature that is difficult to identify or cannulate. Repeated failed attempts contribute to delays in care and frustration for both patients and providers. The growing use of point-of-care ultrasound in acute care has supported the adoption of ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheter placement as an alternative to central venous catheterization. Patients of all ages can undergo ultrasound-guided placement. Nurses, advanced practice providers, and physicians can be trained to perform the procedure. This activity is designed for healthcare professionals to sharpen their skills in performing ultrasound-guided intravenous access and identifying suitable candidates. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the procedure’s proper technique, indications, contraindications, and preparation measures to enhance patient comfort. Possible complications and appropriate mitigation measures will be emphasized. Greater competence will equip clinicians to collaborate within an interprofessional team in caring for individuals who need reliable intravenous access.
