Viral Meningitis

Viral meningitis is a common cause of aseptic meningitis, characterized by inflammation of the meninges, that remains a significant global clinical challenge despite reductions in bacterial meningitis associated with widespread vaccination. This course reviews the clinical features of viral meningitis, including acute fever, headache, photophobia, neck stiffness, nausea, and vomiting, although manifestations vary by age and immune status, as well as the need to diifferentiate viral meningitis from other etiologies as early presentations often overlap and accurate diagnosis is essential to guide management, avoid delays in treatment, and identify patients at risk for complications such as encephalitis, seizures, cerebral edema, and long-term neurologic sequelae. Participants will gain an understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, and management of viral meningitis. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in differentiating viral from bacterial meningitis, applying appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, recognizing high-risk populations, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach to managing this condition, thereby optimizing patient outcomes through timely, evidence-based clinical decision-making.
