Vitamin D in Diabetes

Suboptimal vitamin D status can potentially affect the development of diabetes. The function of vitamin D can be seen in the overall process of insulin secretion and beta cell function. The accumulating evidence suggests that altered vitamin D and calcium homeostasis may play direct and indirect roles in the development of this disease state. This continuing education course reviews the metabolism of vitamin D, the interrelationship between vitamin D and diabetes, and the mechanisms of this relationship to diabetes and its complications.
