Water Toxicity

Water toxicity, also known as water intoxication or acute hyponatremia due to excessive water intake or impaired water regulation, is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by an imbalance between water and sodium levels in the body. Clinical manifestations may include altered mental status, confusion, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, seizures, coma, and death if not recognized and treated promptly. Diagnosis can be challenging because symptoms may resemble psychiatric or neurologic disorders, resulting in delayed intervention. This course reviews the pathophysiology, etiologies, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based management of water toxicity. Participants learn to identify risk factors, interpret laboratory findings, recognize indicators of severity, and implement appropriate treatment strategies. Collaboration among clinicians, emergency specialists, nephrologists, nurses, pharmacists, and other interprofessional team members improves diagnostic accuracy, facilitates timely treatment, enhances monitoring, and optimizes patient outcomes.
