All About Determining Situs in Fetal Echo

All About Determining Situs in Fetal Echo is an enduring educational activity designed to address challenges in accurately determining fetal visceral and atrial situs during routine and targeted fetal echocardiography. Abnormal fetal position, complex left-right orientation, inconsistent scanning protocols, and difficulty correlating abdominal and cardiac landmarks can contribute to diagnostic variability and missed recognition of situs abnormalities and heterotaxy syndromes. Through recorded video instruction, written educational content, and knowledge assessment, learners review the anatomical landmarks and sequential segmental approach used to establish fetal situs. The activity addresses standardized abdominal and thoracic sweeps, assessment of stomach position, cardiac apex orientation, great vessel relationships, atrial morphology, and recognition of abnormal left-right arrangement. The activity is designed to strengthen learners ability to systematically evaluate fetal situs, apply standardized scanning techniques, correlate multiple anatomic landmarks, and recognize findings associated with situs solitus, situs inversus, and heterotaxy. Following the activity, learners should be better prepared to incorporate consistent situs assessment into fetal echocardiographic examinations and provide accurate, clinically useful findings.
