Anovulatory Bleeding

Anovulatory bleeding is a type of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) that occurs when ovulation fails to occur during the menstrual cycle. Without ovulation, progesterone is not produced, resulting in unopposed estrogen stimulation of the endometrial lining. This process leads to irregular, unpredictable, and often heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, which can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life if left untreated. AUB is common during puberty, perimenopause, and in individuals with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome or thyroid disorders. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate management are essential for identifying underlying causes and preventing complications such as anemia or endometrial hyperplasia. Diagnosis involves ruling out other causes of AUB through clinical evaluation, laboratory testing, and imaging. Treatment focuses on correcting underlying endocrine imbalances, controlling symptoms, and reducing the risk of complications. This activity provides a comprehensive overview of AUB associated with ovulatory dysfunction (AUB-O), including its pathophysiology, common causes, clinical presentation, and evidence-based management strategies. This activity also explores the hormonal mechanisms underlying anovulation, helps differentiate anovulatory from ovulatory bleeding, and reviews current diagnostic and treatment guidelines. In addition, this activity also highlights the critical role of the interprofessional healthcare team in delivering effective patient care.
