Chronic Insomnia

Chronic insomnia, defined as trouble falling asleep or staying asleep at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or longer, affects individuals of all ages, with a higher prevalence in women. Chronic insomnia is associated with excessive daytime sleepiness, a higher risk of automobile accidents, and multiple physical and psychiatric comorbidities in adults. In addition, it can hinder childhood development. This educational activity explores the current guidelines for chronic insomnia, emphasizing the essential role of an interprofessional care team in early identification and appropriate intervention. Standardized guidelines, screening considerations, and the importance of addressing patient-initiated concerns about sleep are discussed. By improving screening practices, facilitating early intervention, and engaging in shared decision-making with patients, healthcare professionals can significantly reduce complications associated with chronic insomnia and enhance the quality of life for individuals affected.
