Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia

Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, formerly known as bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia, is a rare form of idiopathic diffuse interstitial lung disease. This condition occurs due to alveolar injury, leading to the formation of organized granulation tissue that obstructs the alveoli and bronchioles; obstructions can result in progressive respiratory failure if left untreated. The condition is often identified through diffuse radiographic findings and worsening respiratory symptoms. Oral glucocorticoids are commonly used for treatment, offering significant improvement for most patients. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial in managing this disease. In this course, participants gain an understanding of the causes, clinical presentation, and treatment of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. They learn how collaborative efforts between pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, and pharmacists enhance the quality of care provided to patients. This interprofessional approach allows for early diagnosis, accurate interpretation of imaging and pathology results, and appropriate pharmacological management all of which improve patient outcomes. By working together, healthcare professionals can optimize treatment plans and ensure comprehensive, patient-centered care.
