Diabetic Foot Infections

Diabetic foot infections are a major complication of diabetes mellitus and a leading cause of lower extremity amputations. This continuing education activity provides a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of diabetic foot infections, with emphasis on preventing ulcer progression and reducing the risk of amputation. Clinicians will review the clinical features of distal symmetric polyneuropathy, ischemia, and infection, which contribute to ulcer formation, as well as diagnostic tools such as imaging, transcutaneous oxygen measurements, and laboratory testing to assess vascular and infectious status. Through participation in this activity, clinicians can expect to enhance their ability to evaluate patients at risk for diabetic foot complications, implement evidence-based strategies for wound care, antibiotic therapy, and offloading, and determine when surgical or adjunctive therapies like hyperbaric oxygen are appropriate. The activity also highlights the importance of coordinated interprofessional care involving podiatrists, wound care specialists, vascular surgeons, and nurses to improve healing outcomes, reduce recurrence, and prevent major limb loss in patients with diabetes.
