Neuropathic Ulcer

Neuropathic ulcers are chronic wounds that develop primarily on the feet when peripheral sensory loss reduces the ability to perceive pain and pressure, allowing repetitive mechanical stress over bony prominences to break down tissue. Commonly associated with peripheral neuropathy, these ulcers can progress to infection, deep tissue involvement, osteomyelitis, and limb-threatening complications when not recognized and treated promptly. This course reviews the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, risk factors, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based management of neuropathic ulcers. Participants learn to identify high-risk patients, assess wound characteristics and vascular status, recognize complications, and implement appropriate wound care, pressure offloading, infection management, and preventive strategies. Collaboration among clinicians, nurses, wound care specialists, podiatrists, vascular specialists, and other interprofessional team members promotes coordinated assessment, timely intervention, patient education, and follow-up, improving wound healing, reducing complications, and optimizing patient outcomes.
