Dysbarism (Dysbaric Disorders)

Dysbarism comprises medical conditions resulting from changes in ambient pressure that exceed the body’s ability to physiologically adapt. These conditions include decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, barotrauma, nitrogen narcosis, high-pressure neurological syndrome, and dysbaric osteonecrosis. Dysbarism occurs most commonly during diving but may also result from aviation, spaceflight, caisson work, tunnel-boring operations, and other rapid or prolonged pressure changes. Clinical manifestations range from ear, sinus, and musculoskeletal pain to pulmonary injury, neurologic deficits, and delayed skeletal injury. Management depends on the underlying disorder and may include supplemental oxygen, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, supportive care, or pressure equalization measures. Prevention requires appropriate exposure assessment, safe diving and decompression practices, and recognition of risk factors. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing dysbarism, including recognizing clinical manifestations, selecting appropriate diagnostic approaches, initiating timely treatment, and coordinating interprofessional care.
