Early Recognition and Diagnosis of Short Bowel Syndrome

This case-based activity follows a patient’s journey from extensive bowel resection that has resulted in short bowel syndrome (SBS) and intestinal failure, emphasizing early recognition, diagnosis, and management. Gastroenterologists, especially those in the community, as well as other practitioners who manage patients with SBS, will have an opportunity to learn the best practices for diagnosing SBS, conducting nutrition assessments, managing SBS with adequate hydration and oral and parenteral nutrition, and applying evidence-based strategies to optimize outcomes and preserve long-term remaining bowel function.
