Establishing a Chief Wellness Officer Position: Create the Organizational Foundation for Professional Well-Being

Organizations need more than ad hoc wellness committees and wellness champions to systematically improve the well-being of physicians and other health professionals. Many organizations are creating a new C-level executive position responsible for organizational strategy and guiding system-wide efforts to improve professional fulfillment and reduce burnout. This leadership position has come to be known as the chief wellness officer (CWO). Establishing a CWO position paves the way for organizations to improve not only care team well-being but also patient experience, health outcomes, retention of key personnel, and a strong financial position.
