Ethylene Glycol Toxicity

Ethylene glycol is a toxic alcohol commonly found in antifreeze and some industrial solvents. Because this compound is a colorless liquid with a sweet taste, it contributes to accidental ingestions, particularly in children, and intentional ingestions in cases of end-of-life attempts or inebriation. Toxicity primarily arises from ingestion, as dermal absorption is minimal. Ethylene glycol metabolism produces toxic metabolites that can cause significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated. Timely recognition and management, including supportive care, laboratory monitoring, and antidotal therapies such as fomepizole or ethanol, are critical for patient outcomes.
