Methanol Toxicity

Methanol is a toxic alcohol found in various household and industrial agents. Exposure to this organic compound can be extremely dangerous, potentially resulting in significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated. Methanol poisoning is most often due to accidental or intentional ingestion and accidental epidemic poisoning due to distillation and fermentation errors or beverage contamination. Products that contain methanol include windshield wiper fluid, industrial solvents, some types of antifreeze, carburetor cleaner, copy machine fluid, perfumes, and various fuels, including those used for warming food. Exposures can cause varying degrees of toxicity, potentially requiring a range of treatments, from close laboratory monitoring to antidotal therapy and dialysis. Fomepizole or ethanol may be given as primary treatment, while dialysis is frequently recommended, unlike in ethylene glycol toxicity. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing methanol toxicity. Participants will gain a broader grasp of the condition’s etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and presentation, as well as the currently recommended diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Preventive strategies will also be discussed. Greater proficiency equips clinicians to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for individuals experiencing methanol poisoning.
