Extended Cystic Fibrosis Course 5: Integrating Mental Health into Cystic Fibrosis Care

Cystic Fibrosis: Integrating Mental Health into CF Care provides an important overview of the key mental health challenges encountered by people with CF and their families. This course is a unique blend of didactic information on different psychological conditions, including depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and tools for assessment and intervention that can be implemented in clinical practice.

Each module details key measures for clinical assessment and best practices for intervention. The first module provides an in-depth review of the International Mental Health Guidelines, with a special section on assessing and addressing suicide risk. Module two fills a specific gap in the literature on the mental health and wellness needs of children with CF under the age of 12, including children with other developmental conditions, such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The third module focuses on the assessment of procedural anxiety and distress, with descriptions of evidence-based interventions to reduce anxiety that can be implemented across the life span–from infancy through adulthood. Module four reviews the physiological consequences of substance misuse, and includes selected assessment tools and therapeutic approaches. Special considerations for substance misuse in the context of transplantation are discussed. Finally, Module five discusses how to build resilience in families, risk factors to watch for, the impact of social determinants of health, and the challenges of being a parent while having CF.
