Fructose-1-Phosphate Aldolase Deficiency

This continuing education activity reviews hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder caused by aldolase B deficiency that can lead to recurrent hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, hepatic dysfunction, renal injury, and failure to thrive after fructose exposure. Because early manifestations are nonspecific and often emerge during infancy when fructose-containing foods are introduced, clinicians may not promptly recognize the disorder or initiate appropriate evaluation. This gap can result in delayed diagnosis, preventable metabolic crises, and avoidable end-organ complications. The activity addresses this gap by strengthening clinical recognition, diagnostic reasoning, genetic confirmation, dietary management, complication surveillance, family counseling, and interprofessional coordination. Participants will gain practical strategies for identifying suspected hereditary fructose intolerance, avoiding unsafe fructose exposure, supporting lifelong dietary adherence, monitoring hepatic and renal outcomes, and improving patient-centered long-term care.
