Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked enzymatic disorder affecting cellular defense against oxidative stress. Because erythrocytes lack nuclei and repair mechanisms, a deficiency in G6PD can lead to acute hemolytic anemia during oxidative challenges such as infections, ingestion of fava beans, or exposure to certain drugs, including antimalarials and sulfonamides. The condition may also contribute to neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and kernicterus, particularly when diagnosis or management is delayed. This course reviews the accurate recognition, diagnostic testing, and preventive counseling for G6PD, which are essential for reducing morbidity and improving patient safety. This course explores G6PD biology, inheritance, clinical presentation, diagnostic strategies, and management principles across age groups. Participants will learn to recognize triggers, interpret laboratory findings, and implement evidence-based interventions for hemolysis and hyperbilirubinemia, and gain strategies for interprofessional coordination. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying the G6PD, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition, ultimately optimizing patient-centered care, medication safety, and long-term outcomes through proactive education, testing, and prevention.
