Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in childhood and primarily affects infants and young children. Arising from neural crest progenitor cells, it most commonly originates in the adrenal medulla but may develop anywhere along the sympathetic nervous system. Clinical presentation ranges from an incidental abdominal mass to widely metastatic disease with bone pain, cytopenias, or paraneoplastic syndromes. This activity reviews the epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, diagnostic evaluation, staging, and risk stratification of neuroblastoma, including the prognostic significance of MYCN amplification, ALK mutations, and chromosomal abnormalities. Evidence-based management strategies, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation, and immunotherapy, are discussed. This activity is designed to enhance clinician competence in recognizing neuroblastoma presentations, performing appropriate diagnostic evaluation, interpreting molecular findings, applying risk-adapted treatment strategies, and coordinating interprofessional care to improve outcomes for pediatric patients.
