Herpes Zoster

This continuing medical education activity reviews the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and complications of herpes zoster, a reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus that can cause substantial acute pain, postherpetic neuralgia, ocular disease, neurologic complications, and disseminated infection. The activity addresses a practice gap in timely recognition of characteristic dermatomal lesions, appropriate diagnostic testing when presentations are atypical, prompt antiviral therapy, pain treatment, ophthalmology referral, and vaccination counseling. Participants will review clinical features that distinguish herpes zoster from dermatologic, oral, neurologic, and ocular conditions that mimic it. The activity also examines evidence-based antiviral dosing, strategies for postherpetic neuralgia, risk assessment in older adults and immunocompromised patients, and prevention through recombinant zoster vaccination. Learners are expected to improve diagnostic accuracy, select appropriate therapy, reduce preventable complications, and coordinate patient-centered care across the interprofessional team.
