Hyperacusis

Hyperacusis is a rare auditory disorder characterized by reduced tolerance to everyday sounds, often perceived as excessively loud or painful. Patients frequently develop sound avoidance behaviors, which can impair social, occupational, and recreational functioning. The condition commonly coexists with tinnitus and may arise from diverse etiologies, including noise exposure, head trauma, or underlying neurological and systemic disorders. Differential diagnosis is critical, as conditions such as Bell palsy, migraines, Lyme disease, neurosyphilis, post-traumatic stress disorder, and superior canal dehiscence syndrome can present with overlapping symptoms. Hyperacusis affects 3.2% to 17.1% of adolescents and 8% to 15.2% of adults, highlighting the clinical relevance of early recognition and management. The disorder can significantly diminish quality of life, and failure to diagnose or treat appropriately may contribute to long-term physical and psychological sequelae. This activity enhances clinician competence in evaluating and managing hyperacusis by reviewing its proposed pathophysiology, diagnostic strategies, differential diagnoses, and evidence-informed treatment approaches. Participants gain practical guidance for identifying contributing factors, interpreting audiologic findings, and selecting individualized management plans. Emphasis is placed on interprofessional collaboration among audiologists, otolaryngologists, neurologists, and mental health professionals to optimize comprehensive care, coordinate timely referrals, and improve patient outcomes. Clinicians also learn strategies for counseling patients, mitigating functional impairment, and fostering adherence to sound desensitization or other therapeutic interventions, ultimately reducing the disorder s impact on social and occupational functioning.
