Ischemic Stroke

Acute ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of death and long-term disability worldwide, requiring rapid recognition, accurate etiologic classification, and timely reperfusion therapy to improve neurologic outcomes. This course reviews advances in neuroimaging, thrombolytic therapy, mechanical thrombectomy, and evidence-based stroke systems of care, which continue to reshape the early management of acute ischemic stroke across diverse clinical settings. This activity explores the pathophysiology, vascular syndromes, cerebral autoregulation, ischemic penumbra, diagnostic evaluation, and current treatment strategies outlined in contemporary stroke guidelines. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of stroke subtypes using the TOAST classification system, characteristic clinical presentations associated with major vascular territories, imaging findings relevant to treatment eligibility, and current recommendations for intravenous thrombolysis, endovascular thrombectomy, blood pressure management, and acute inpatient care.
