Lightning Injuries

Lightning injuries represent a potentially life-threatening form of environmental trauma associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although many lightning-related incidents are preventable, affected individuals may experience a broad spectrum of injuries involving the cardiovascular, neurologic, dermatologic, musculoskeletal, and respiratory systems. Prompt recognition and appropriate management are essential to reduce complications and improve outcomes. This course reviews the epidemiology, mechanisms of injury, clinical manifestations, evaluation, and treatment of lightning-related injuries across diverse clinical settings. Participants learn to identify characteristic injury patterns, prioritize emergency assessment and stabilization, recognize potential short- and long-term sequelae, and implement evidence-based management strategies. Emphasis is placed on timely diagnosis, resuscitation principles, and prevention measures. Collaboration among clinicians, emergency personnel, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals enhances communication, supports coordinated care, and improves patient outcomes by enabling comprehensive management and follow-up for individuals affected by lightning injuries.
