Ocular Trauma Prevention Strategies and Patient Counseling

This continuing medical education activity examines prevention strategies, patient counseling, and interprofessional approaches to reducing ocular trauma and related vision loss. Ocular trauma remains a leading cause of preventable visual impairment and blindness, with risks arising from occupational hazards, sports, recreational activities, fireworks, firearms, falls, chemical exposure, and home injuries. Despite the availability of protective eyewear standards and safety recommendations, clinicians may inconsistently assess risk, counsel patients, identify high-risk activities, or coordinate prevention and follow-up strategies. This activity addresses that gap by reviewing common mechanisms of injury, risk assessment, evidence-based prevention strategies, first aid counseling, protective eyewear recommendations, and team-based interventions. Participants will gain actionable skills to improve patient education, prevent complications, make emergency referral decisions, increase adherence to preventive measures, and enhance collaboration among eye care, emergency medicine, nursing, allied health, occupational safety, and rehabilitation professionals.
