Neonatal Hypertension

Neonatal hypertension, though identified in clinical settings for decades, has only recently been recognized as a distinct pathology with its own diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. Although less frequently recognized than adult hypertension, neonatal hypertension has emerged as a significant concern in neonatal care, particularly within neonatal intensive care units. This activity provides an in-depth overview of neonatal hypertension, addressing its evolving definition, epidemiology, risk factors, and diagnostic challenges, which are often complicated by the historical lack of accurate blood pressure norms in neonates. Both invasive and noninvasive techniques for measuring blood pressure in neonates, including their technical nuances, limitations, and best practices to ensure accurate interpretation, are also reviewed. This course explores the diverse etiologies ranging from renal and pulmonary disorders to endocrine and iatrogenic causes and learn to identify the often subtle clinical presentations in affected infants. Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic evaluation strategies, including the use of appropriate imaging and laboratory studies. Early recognition and proactive management are crucial, as they can significantly impact the long-term health outcomes of affected infants. Additionally, evidence-based management approaches tailored to disease severity, including supportive care, pharmacologic therapies, and indications for surgical intervention, are outlined. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying neonatal hypertension, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition in the neonatal population to improve patient outcomes.
