Sonography Fetal Assessment, Protocols, and Interpretation

Fetal ultrasonography serves as a cornerstone in assessing fetal development, detecting anomalies, and monitoring well-being across all trimesters, with increasing importance in high-risk pregnancies complicated by obesity, hypertension, and gestational diabetes. This course reviews ultrasound examinations, which are standardized by major professional societies and are categorized as standard, specialized, or limited, each with trimester-specific indications and protocols. Advances in imaging now enable earlier detection of structural anomalies, improving opportunities for timely diagnosis, genetic counseling, and intervention. Participants will also gain an understanding of the variability in terminology and application, which contributes to clinical confusion and missed diagnostic opportunities. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in ultrasound classifications, indications, and trimester-based protocols, thereby improving their ability to select appropriate studies, interpret findings accurately, and implement an appropriate interprofessional approach when employing this modality to optimize patient outcomes through early identification of fetal and placental abnormalities.
