Pill-Induced Esophagitis

Pill-induced esophagitis is an esophageal mucosal injury caused by medications that become lodged or dissolve slowly within the esophagus, producing direct toxic or irritant effects. Although the condition is often self-limiting, delayed recognition can result in persistent ulceration, bleeding, stricture, or rarely perforation. A practice gap exists when clinicians do not obtain a complete medication history, recognize medication and patient-related risk factors, or provide evidence-based preventive counseling, leading to missed diagnosis, unnecessary testing, continued exposure to the causative medication, and preventable complications. This activity reviews clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, prevention, and differential diagnosis. Participants will strengthen diagnostic reasoning, select appropriate testing and supportive treatment, identify patients requiring specialty evaluation, counsel patients on safe medication administration, and improve interprofessional collaboration to reduce recurrent injury and improve patient-centered outcomes.
