Preventive Cardiology

The AHA PREVENT risk scoring model, which has replaced the prior Pooled Cohort Equations-based model in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk prediction, will be reviewed. Risk-based decisions regarding performance of additional atherosclerotic screening tools and treatment decisions will be examined. Lipid-lowering therapy goals are based on the risk estimate informed by demographic factors, laboratory testing, and imaging (e.g. coronary artery calcium score) results. This presentation reviews the literature surrounding lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) as a cardiovascular risk factor, including its genetic determinants, structure, and atherogenic mechanisms. The discussion will explore the atherogenic mechanisms of Lp(a), its genetic determinants, along with contemporary and future management strategies for elevated Lp(a). The webcast will also address the evolving role of aspirin in primary prevention, and the use of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in assessing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk.
