Relapsing Malaria

Malaria remains a major global health burden, with an estimated 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths in 2024, predominantly in Africa. Malaria is caused by single-celled parasites of the genus Plasmodium. P vivax, P ovale wallikeri, and P ovale curtisi are 3 species unique for their dormant liver hypnozoite stages that cause relapsing infections months to years after initial exposure. This course details the transmission of malaria by Anopheles mosquitoes, the parasites’ hepatic and erythrocytic phases, and the influence of these processes on clinical symptoms, such as cyclical fevers, anemia, and systemic illness. Participants will also gain an understanding of appropriate diagnostic strategies that rely on microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests and evidence-based, patient-centered management, including treatment of both blood-stage infection and latent hepatic forms, with attention to drug resistance patterns and patients’ G6PD statuses. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying malaria infections, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
