Relapsing fever typically refers to malaria-like illnesses caused by various spirochetes belonging to Borrelia species and characterized by recurrent fevers, chills, and malaise. This symptom is typically associated with tick-borne and louse-borne relapsing fever syndromes. The causative organism and associated vector vary based on the geographic area of exposure; however, regardless of the specific causative organism, relapsing fever is treated with established antibiotic regimines based on the patients age. This course explores the complexities surrounding relapsing fever, including the clinical manifestations, diagnostic guidelines, varying etiologies, and treatment recommendations, such as the need to observe patients for several hours after the initiation of antibiotic therapy due to the risk of a sepsis-like response. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying relapsing fever, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
