Riboflavin Deficiency

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is a water-soluble, heat-stable vitamin essential for cellular energy metabolism. It serves as a precursor to flavin adenine dinucleotide and flavin mononucleotide, cofactors required for flavoproteins involved in the citric acid cycle, mitochondrial electron transport, redox reactions, and metabolism of other B vitamins. These processes support ATP production and cellular homeostasis. Riboflavin also has antioxidant functions and supports immune health as well as skin and mucosal integrity. Deficiency may cause mucocutaneous lesions, normocytic anemia, fatigue, and neuromuscular symptoms, and can lead to secondary niacin deficiency. At-risk populations include those with poor intake, malabsorption, chronic alcohol use, or genetic disorders affecting riboflavin metabolism. Evaluation includes clinical assessment and measurement of erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficient. Management involves dietary optimization, supplementation, and interprofessional care to prevent complications and improve outcomes.
