Risk and Safety Overview in Emergency Medicine Part 1

In this course, Risk & Safety Overview in Emergency Medicine Part 1, we introduce key concepts of patient safety, risk mitigation, and error reduction essential for the safe practice of emergency medicine. Using medical literature, claims data, and case studies, we provide valuable information and recommendations you can apply in your next shift and throughout your career. In Risk & Safety Overview in Emergency Medicine Part 2, we will apply these concepts to the commonly encountered high-risk clinical entities through a series of case studies. This course presents a summary of the key findings from our “failure to diagnose” courses. We also present summary information from our database that now includes more than 4 million risk/safety data points from over 300,000 high-risk patient encounters. After completing this course, providers and the healthcare team should be able to: apply risk and safety recommendations for patients with abnormal vital signs in the emergency department or other acute care settings in order to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors; implement a discharge instruction program that provides patients and/or caregivers with a clear understanding of the key elements of the patient condition and next steps for follow-up care; and establish a team approach to coordinate care for high-risk patients in the emergency department or other acute care settings.
