Sporotrichosis

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii, a dimorphic fungus that exists as mold in cooler temperatures and as yeast at body temperature, commonly found in soil, vegetation, and decaying organic matter. Transmission of this pathogen typically occurs through skin punctures involving contaminated plant material, often affecting gardeners. This course explores sporotrichosis, including the diagnostic processes, preventative measures, and clinical manifestations. The infection primarily presents in 3 forms: cutaneous (most common), pulmonary, and disseminated. Cutaneous sporotrichosis manifests as painless skin lesions that may ulcerate and follow lymphatic channels. Pulmonary involvement, associated with chronic lung conditions or immunosuppression, can lead to cavitary lung disease. Disseminated sporotrichosis occurs in immunocompromised individuals and may affect multiple organs, including the eyes, causing ocular sporotrichosis. Diagnosis is confirmed by fungal culture and supported by histopathological and molecular methods. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying sporotrichosis, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
