Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

Lupus erythematosus is an inflammatory connective tissue disorder characterized by the involvement of pathogenic autoantibodies, as well as immune complex formation and deposition, attributed to the loss of immune tolerance. Cutaneous features in lupus constitute one of the diagnostic criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus. Cutaneous findings in lupus encompass a wide range of manifestations and can occur with or without systemic involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus. One form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus is subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Diagnosis of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus involves clinical evaluation of characteristic skin lesions, along with laboratory tests to assess autoantibodies. Management typically includes the use of topical corticosteroids and immunomodulators like antimalarials, along with sun protection measures, to minimize exacerbations. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the condition’s risk factors, pathophysiology, presentations, and best diagnostic and therapeutic practices. Greater proficiency equips clinicians to collaborate within an interprofessional team caring for individuals with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus.
