Pregnancy Medications

Medication use during pregnancy presents complex clinical challenges, as treatment decisions must balance maternal therapeutic benefit with potential risks to fetal growth and development. Evolving evidence has led to decreased use of some medications due to recognized risks and increased use of others as safety data have emerged; however, information remains limited because of barriers to research in pregnant populations. This activity provides an evidence-based overview of medication safety in pregnancy and lactation, including commonly used prescription and over-the-counter therapies, risk-assessment principles, and current labeling systems, such as the Pregnancy and Lactation Labeling Rule. Emphasis is placed on first-trimester considerations, teratogenic risks, and management of acute and chronic conditions. Participants will gain practical knowledge to evaluate medication safety, apply risk-benefit principles, utilize clinical resources, and collaborate effectively within interprofessional teams to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes.
