Glucagonoma

Glucagonoma is a rare pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pNET) originating from the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans, which produce glucagon. Most cases are sporadic, though about 20% are associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). Typically diagnosed in individuals in their sixth to seventh decades of life, glucagonomas are often metastatic at presentation, commonly involving the liver. The hallmark clinical features stem from excessive glucagon secretion and include hyperglycemia, progressive weight loss, normocytic anemia, and a distinctive skin condition known as necrolytic migratory erythema. Other symptoms may involve cheilitis, glossitis, diarrhea, venous thrombosis, and neuropsychiatric disturbances such as depression and cognitive decline. This course explores the pathophysiologic and management complexities of glucagonomas, as well as the characteristic clinical features and diagnostic findings. The management of the pNET depends on the tumor’s size, spread, and grade. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying glucagonoma, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
