Conjunctivochalasis

Conjunctivochalasis (CCh) is a common ocular surface disorder characterized by redundant, loose, nonedematous folds of bulbar conjunctiva that disrupt normal tear film distribution and impair physiologic tear drainage, resulting in tear instability and chronic ocular irritation. Clinician evaluation focuses on identifying hallmark slit-lamp findings and differentiating CCh from dry eye disease and other causes of epiphora, which frequently overlap in clinical presentation. The activity emphasizes recognition of symptom patterns such as foreign body sensation, intermittent blurred vision, and tearing that worsens with blinking or downgaze. Participants learn a stepwise, evidence-informed management approach beginning with conservative therapy, including lubrication and anti-inflammatory agents, and progressing to surgical options such as conjunctival recession or fornix reconstruction for refractory disease. Integration of interprofessional collaboration among ophthalmology, optometry, and ocular surface specialists enhances diagnostic accuracy, supports individualized treatment planning, and improves long-term ocular surface stability and patient-reported outcomes.
