Gastrinoma

Gastrinoma is a functional neuroendocrine tumor that autonomously secretes gastrin, leading to excessive gastric acid production and the development of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES). ZES manifests with refractory peptic ulcer disease, severe gastroesophageal reflux, and secretory diarrhea. Gastrinomas predominantly arise within the “gastrinoma triangle,” encompassing the pancreas and duodenum, and frequently occur in association with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). This course explores the complexities surrounding this condition, including the current diagnostic challenges and elusive pathophysiology. Notably, metastatic dissemination is evident in approximately 60% of patients at diagnosis, emphasizing the imperative for early and accurate detection to enable prompt therapeutic intervention, reduce further metastatic spread, and ultimately improve patient prognosis.
